Protection Trinity Tattoo

Today I embellished the leg of a bagpiper who will show his tattoo proudly when wearing a kilt. A classic triquetra is matched with a ring of knots, uniting simplicity and complexity, and backed with a soft green accent. A manly badge for an ethnic musician proud of his heritage.

Army Aviator Family Crest Tattoo

For Memorial Day here is my contribution, a combination of military insignia and family crest for an Army helicopter pilot who flew over 800 missions in his one year tour in Vietnam. A documentary called VIETNAM MEDEVAC is being filmed now, telling the story of this brave man and his crew, 40 years later. As he says in the documentary : "In order to function in that environment, you have to be willing to accept the fact that you're going to die. And I did do that. I never ever expected to come home from Vietnam." But he did, and now he is living testimony both to the courage and bravery displayed by our soldiers under fire, but also to the depth of humanity and humility that comes from facing such horrors and challenges as a young man.

Full Color Knotwork Forearm Tattoo

Using Celtic knotwork as a cover-up can be very difficult, and for this project the use of color was absolutely necessary. The pre-existing follies of youth were so black, covering all sides of the arm, that a very bold design was required and it demanded completely solid coverage with ink. A pattern was created on such a bold scale that it allowed for a lot of black background areas, and much black shading to mask over the old work. Then a blue stripe was run up the center of each braid line, and finished off with a mint green pin-stripe on the edges. Without the lighter color the arm would have been a solid mass of black and blue, but with it the pattern comes alive. And the wearer is transformed.

Celtic Knotwork Shamrock Forearm Sleeve

A forearm of interconnected knotwork incorporating a shamrock makes a bold statement with the appearance of body armor. A touch of color in the spaces within the shamrock gives extra emphasis to that focal point, and the half-sleeve is perfectly fitted to the arm to approximate chain mail.
