Originating in ancient Egyptian iconography, the ouroboros entered Western tradition via the Greek magical tradition and was adopted as a symbol in Western alchemy. The serpent eating its own tail has existed for centuries throughout Norse, Greek, African, Hindu, and many other systems of mythology. The Ouroboros has been said to have a meaning of infinity or wholeness.
